An environmental company was carrying out an investigation after a property in Vancouver encountered oily earth and fuel fumes whilst digging for a storm drainage sump.

It was suspected a neighbouring property may have an abandoned underground oil tank which had deteriorated and was contaminating the land across the property lines.

GeoScan performed a subsurface survey of the neighbouring property using Ground Penetrating Radar and a ferromagnetic locater which revealed not one but two large anomalies on the property close to the contaminated property border. One anomaly had a broken reflection in the lengthways direction, suggesting perhaps the metal anomaly was not complete, or partially broken.

The anomalies were day lighted and revealed two underground oil storage tanks, one in which had been partially cut open, right near the fence line, most likely the cause of the contamination.
